How to Measure AEO Across Search and AI Answers

To learn how to measure AEO, begin with the questions your audience actually asks. Record whether an answer mentions your brand, cites your pages, and describes you accurately; then repeat the same checks over time. Aeograder uses this framework to make an answer audit easier to plan, not to turn one result into a definitive score.

A useful result is a record you can revisit

AEO measurement is more useful when you keep the question, answer, source links, and date together. These related guides address narrower parts of that work.

Check visibility, attribution, and accuracy

A brand mention, a citation, and a correct description are different observations. The balance between them depends on the question and the person using the result.

Content lead

A guide answers a common customer question, but the brand is absent from the answer. Check whether the page itself gives a direct, supported answer and whether other cited pages explain the topic more clearly.

Keep a question-by-question record of mentions and citations. Use it to prioritize clearer content rather than assuming that a single missing mention proves the guide has failed.

Community manager

An answer draws on a forum discussion instead of a company page. Identify what the discussion contributes, verify its claims, and note whether the resulting answer represents the brand fairly.

Separate community visibility from owned-page citations. Both can affect what a reader sees, but they call for different follow-up work.

Two graders appear to disagree about the same site. Compare their prompts, dates, and definitions of a mention before treating the outputs as contradictory.

Document the measurement method beside each result so a change in method is not mistaken for a change in answer visibility.

Researcher

A category answer names several competitors but leaves out the brand. Repeat the question with a consistent prompt and inspect both the named brands and the sources supporting the answer.

Build an evidence log that distinguishes an omitted mention from an incorrect claim or an uncited recommendation.

Measure answers in a repeatable sequence

Choose a small set of real questions first. A consistent procedure matters more than a large collection of answers gathered under different conditions.

  1. 1

    Define the questions and baseline

Group questions by intent: definitions, comparisons, recommendations, and problems your product helps solve. Write each prompt exactly as you will use it, choose the answer experiences you will check, and note the date and relevant settings. Start with questions that a potential customer might genuinely ask, not just prompts engineered to mention your brand.

  2. 2

    Capture what the answer says

For each question, save the answer and any visible source links. Mark whether the brand appears, whether a relevant owned page is cited, and whether the description is accurate. Record competitors separately. A mention without a citation and a citation without a mention are distinct outcomes; neither alone tells you whether the reader received a useful answer.

  3. 3

    Review patterns and repeat

Look for recurring omissions, outdated facts, weak source pages, and questions where the answer misunderstands the category. Improve the underlying information where you have evidence of a gap, then rerun the same questions under comparable conditions. Keep the earlier captures: they help you distinguish a durable pattern from normal answer variation.

Know what an answer audit cannot prove

An audit observes particular answers at particular moments. It does not reveal every answer a customer could receive or explain every reason a source was chosen.

No universal AEO score

Different prompts, answer systems, locations, and dates can produce different results. A single percentage cannot represent all of them, and an arbitrary aggregate can hide a serious accuracy problem.

Workaround

Report the question set and conditions with any summary. Show mentions, citations, and factual errors as separate measures.

A citation is not proof of causation

Seeing a page cited does not establish why an answer system selected it. Likewise, publishing an edit before a later mention does not prove the edit caused that mention.

Workaround

Preserve dated captures and describe changes as observations. Test the same questions repeatedly before drawing a cautious conclusion.

Visibility is not business impact

An answer may mention your brand without sending a visitor to your site or helping anyone make a decision. Some useful answers may also describe your product correctly without linking to it.

Workaround

Evaluate answer quality alongside your own relevant traffic, inquiries, and customer feedback where those records are available.

A fixed prompt set has blind spots

Customers ask follow-up questions and use wording your audit may miss. A narrow list can make visibility look stable while important topics remain unchecked.

Workaround

Review customer questions periodically, add new intents, and keep the original set unchanged when comparing one audit period with another.

Frequently asked questions about measuring AEO

Choose questions your audience asks and check the answers they receive. Record brand mentions, cited pages, factual accuracy, and the conditions of each check. Repeat the same questions later and compare patterns rather than relying on one answer.

Keep the exact question, date, answer text, visible citations, and any relevant settings. Note whether your brand appears, whether the answer describes it correctly, and whether it cites a useful page. These details make a later comparison more meaningful than a bare score.

No. An answer can name a brand without linking to its site, or cite a page without naming the brand in its response. Track both separately and check whether the information presented to the reader is correct.

Use a schedule you can maintain and keep the core questions consistent between checks. Repeat sooner when important product facts change or you discover a consequentially incorrect answer. Avoid treating ordinary variation between individual responses as a trend.

Not conclusively. It can show which sources appeared and whether your page answers the question clearly, but it cannot reveal every factor behind a generated answer. Compare the cited material with your page to identify plausible gaps without claiming a proven cause.
